About three decades back, the young visionary student leader of the prestigious Ravenshaw College of Orissa was deeply concerned on the cause of poverty, which prevailed over 80% population of the Indian society.

This thought process was transformed into an experiment which was performed in a more organized manner when ‘AWARENESS' was born on October, 02, 1986.

AWARENESS INDIA since its inception has promoted its founder's thoughts through various activities. Several programmes on health, education, rural development, legal aid, social empowerment and alike were conducted. Protest rallies, road shows, demonstrations were made and several issues of grave social concerns were addressed. However, the young man was convinced that the process experimented cannot eradicate poverty.  

The answer that came out of unanswered questions by long experiments was to develop alternative organic leadership at different levels of the society by creating mass consciousness and opening a route to economic empowerment covering 80% population of the society.

The process of alternative leadership is yet to take a big lift, however the movement is on in several ways.

Micro-Finance Activity was started from the year 1998 after the visit of the leader to Bangladesh Gramin Bank. It was followed by his visit to the International Microcredit Summit at New York. Micro Finance Activity was started with a small corpus fund of the organization backed by the creation of a savings base of members.

The year 2006-07 saw large funds to the order of Rs.8000 lakhs being managed by the organization. Cumulative loans disbursed during the year were to the tune of Rs.1200 million. Members base was 1.2 million & loan base was 0.3 million. The operations covered all 30 districts, 314 Blocks, 6234 GPs in the state of Orissa & expanded to neighbouring states of West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand & Chhatishgarh.

Operating offices crossed 600 and employees' strength crossed 7000 and many lending institutions came forward to extend their financial support for the activity. As a result, the organization has ventured to expand its activity to the whole of India within a short while.
